Dustin Hoffman's Directorial Debut Is OK!

Time after time, I have been disappointed with movies featuring actors playing musicians or singers. And, this time, again, the result is the same I would say. Typically, these movies would feature a story around relationships between and among musicians. I just was never satisfied with their fakery. In this one, we are talking about ex-superstar singers. Throughout, I don't think I saw Tom Courtney even acted like he was singing, tho he was supposed to have been a superstar. So was Maggie Smith. The main jest was their relationship. Through much of the movie, they were at odds with each other because of their past relationship. Eventually, they reconciled, and, purportedly, put on a great finale, singing a great quarter with 2 other ex-superstars. The climax, however, didn't even feature them lip-synching. And, THAT was the turnoff. It is often awful when these superstar actors try to show some musicianship. Mr. Hoffman didn't even have them lip-sing to tunes by actual singers (don't have to be superstars like Pavarotti.....). Result: Pretty disappointing. Nevertheless, we try to be nice, by rounding 2.5 stars up to 3.
