If you look on this site you'll see the following genres trying to identify this film: Art/Foreign, Drama, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Thriller and Adaptation. The reason for so many genre's is the film tries to be all of it and fails. It's amazing that horror wasn't added to this since my local cable company described it as such. The local cable company also described the director as a master of suspense. I just looked up Nicolas Roeg on yahoo and found that he directed 3 movies of which none were listed under suspense. Anyway, back to the film. It was terrible. I'm not a prude; but the sex scenes were too much and added little to the film. The film also suffered from "special effects?" that depicted sperm and fetuses. Obviously done in the name of "art", but way unnecessary. The connection to how the witch of a mother affected the couple was absurd. BTW, Donald Sutherland is barely in the film and plays no role; obviously a way to market this bad film with a big name.
