Yes, a prequel of sorts, but based more on the original idea by Dan O'Bannon, who told the story of astronauts discovering a lost civilization with unexpected terrors. The first Alien screenplay was changed, and the story took place instead on-board the claustrophobic Ripley-piloted ship.
Scott has already said he hopes to make a sequel to Prometheus, so this may indeed be more of a series of its own sort, rather than simply an Alien follow-up. We get hints from the preview that something might be different about the Aliens, and/or the way they infect others. As for the Space-Jockey, we may see him walking around a bit, who knows?
