This is an absolutely excellent western. Duvall and Costner pair up to give both the romantic, just side of the genre with Duall, and the stone cold killer trying to redeem himself with Costner. Their interaction and mutual respect within the story really works. Reminds me very much of the great Owen Wister novel of early 20th Century, "The Virginian". The tug and pull of a lawless territory between good and bad. Probably the best gun fight scene I have ever seen from a western movie. Outstanding.
