This movie chickened-out at the end. The book on which this film is based had a much more interesting conclusion. The film took the cheap way out and that pretty much ruined it for me. Truly amazing acting though; almost makes it worth seeing. Judi Densch is especially amazing at conveying her character's pain and solitude, and making us care about a pretty odious character in spite of ourselves. My advice: read the book first, then see the movie to see how great it could have been with the original ending. (I also thought the boy was miscast; he just seemed too young and not appealing enough, though his acting was also spot-on.) Another sad comparison, the film left out what would have been a great scene between Barbara, her old friend Jennifer, and Jennifer's fiancee. Sue also should have been developed a lot further. Oh well.
