The Most Hopeless and Darkest of the Coen Films

star55

The Coen brothers stray farthest from their previous films in this magnus opus. Most of the other Coen films are almost equal parts drama and dark comedy (Fargo, Barton Fink, even Miller's Crossing, the "Dude"). N.C.F.O.M. has some comedic touches, centered on west Texas idioms and responses to the the crazy madness of the central villain, Anton Chiguhr (nicely played by Bardem). Bardem, Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones give oscar-worthy performances, and the bit players all are convincing too. Woody Harrelson has a good small part as a bounty hunter. This ranks up their with Fargo, and even may surpass it in greatness (although Fargo is probably more watchable). This film will depress you, but maybe we should be depressed at the state of our country.

A truly frightening performance by Javier Bardem . The best movie villain in a long , long time ! I shall watch it many more times over the years .
