This drama is based on the true story of Roberta Guaspari, an mom who is lost when her husband leaves her. With her two young sons, she starts a violin class for young children in Harlem, NY.
There are some really moving moments in this inspiring story. You really get a sense for the difference music and the discipline it must take (I wish I had had her to teach me music!).
However, though this is the type of story I often love (Holland's Opus, Sister act,...), this movie never really seems to take off. One black spot was the "super bad" established music teacher, who was played with such overwhelming hatred. I also thought that Meryll Streep played the central role as way too much the "poor helpless woman, forced to live in a world run by evil men."
Overall the movie is worth watching, but left me feeling it could have been so much better.
