Mission to Mars is a great movie. It could've had a little more action I suppose, but otherwise it was outstanding. I can barely find any scenes where the special effects were not realistic enough, since I have heard some critics complaining about that. The story line was good too. If moviegoers hated Red Planet(dont even mentin war of the worlds 2, it was cr*p) than I cant figure out why this one was disliked so much. I suppose there was not enough action. Come on, its not like its a typical Discovery channel mars movie... its science fiction. The rotating camera trick was done to make the viewers feel weightless, and the alien wasnt so dumb looking. The people that worked on the movie spent lots of time discussing how to do this, and how to do that, and quite frankly, it wouldve been pretty stupid if it looked like the ones you see in the x-files. The bad comments that lots of people put for Mission to Mars just show that most Americans are not interested in these types of movies (it made more money outside the U.S. then in the U.S. box office) thats why nobodys been makeing any big budget space movies, except for TV maybe.(Also its budget was $100 mil & it recieved $110 mil) Finally, the martian could definitely be interprited as Jim's dead wife Maggie and he decides to go with her. She said in the movie that "life reaches out for life, its like what we're born for isnt it, to stand on a new world and look beyond it to the next one". Jim also mentions on the way to Mars that she may have 'known' about what was gonna happen. Lastly, right before the end of the climax where Jim is seeing his best memories before the ship blasts away, the last memory shown is Maggie on their wedding day when they kiss, which somewhat supports my view of the ending. Another reason why I view the ending like that is because I cant imagine Jim McConnel livng the rest of his life with a bunch of transparent aliens in another galaxy. All in all, what people were expecting was a lot of evil aliens. :D
