I've always loved Woody Allens movies. I've seen Manhattan about 15 times over the years. I even like his recent film. But Midnight in Paris falls completely flat. It seemed more like a travelogue than a movie.
Paris is beautiful, as always.
But the foreground is populated with cartoon characters that pop into the movie just long enough to spout off a few sentences of cliches ie: Hemingway's total appearance consisted of ranting about how bravery and facing death are prerequisites for writers. Dali just kept repeating his name.
Woody Allen seems to be so adoring of his idols that he forgot to write a movie for them.
When Zelda Fitzgerald attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Seine, I empathized so much that I left the movie theater at that point.
