He tried too hard and shows he was on the skids...

I know we did not see the polished Diamond but this would have turned out to be Cubic Zerconia.
His technical work has always been his strong suite and I will give him that much. His backup in every area was outstanding as per the perfectionist he was. But the effort was seriously flawed. His best attempt was at the supposed emotion-tugging Save the Planet number, and while I am a a big fan of the CONCEPT and wish more artists could contribute here, I found the effort a bit mediocre and almost awkward. He merely portrayed how much originality we gave him credit for that was NOT his in the first place. Remember the Moonwalk number? Copied from another artist. Michael did it better and recognized the genius here but he did not invent it, as we believed. Of course, there are performers who have stolen much of their craft from others--maybe Robin Williams-- but they are still better than the originals oftentimes, and so, I believe, it was with Michael. Like Sinatra, he was 70 percent hype and 90 percent guts. Sometimes that's really what it takes to make it. Hey, it works for a lot of STARS.
