A Terrifying Vision of the End

star44

The first 20 minutes of the film is truly remarkable, beautifully staging the destruction of the earth by a rogue planet. The terrifying sublimity of Trier's vision is heightened to the extreme by his use of Wagner's opening prelude to Tristan und Isolde. The rest of the film, however, cannot sustain this aesthetic achievment, even though the narrative arc and acting are well rendered, the film as a whole leaves you strangely empty and wondering if the end of the earth and its long, painful evolutionary history is actually tragic.
