Beautifully filmed...I watched it with fast forward on much of the inane dialogue, which is the best way to see this movie. The last scenes were very beautiful, and contained the most effective dialogue of the entire film. Yes, hard to forget.

You fast forwarded the "inane" dialogue but yet said the most effective dialogue of the entire film was during the last scenes. This is kind of confusing. I think one needs to watch a movie in its entirety and context and then make a critique.

I went to redbox and looked through the movies- since redbox can sometimes have really weird or just boring movies, I usually look at the actors/actresses and go according to that. So I saw the names Kiefer Sutherland and kirsten dunst, and said to myself, "Well this should be a good movie then!" And i was mostly right!
This movie is not a feel good movie for sure.. it is not a documentary on how the end of the world would be if another planet were to come into contact with earth, it is not to show the average state in which a depressed person is in, and its surely is not a movie for someone who likes action-packed adventure movies..
However, this movie had beautiful pictures, it did not make me cry-but it made me feel sad and almost lonely.., I almost felt trapped at the end like the characters did.. I thought it was interesting how the main character played by Kirsten first described how she felt to her sister in the beginning of the movie- later it showed pretty much how she felt inside all the time, and thats probably why she was so comfortable with the whole thing actually happening.
It is a very interesting movie, I might consider watching it again.. In a couple years. :)

If you liked it you didn't get it. People keep writing that if you didn't like it you didn't get it... Actually I think it's the other way around. You have to know absolutely nothing about either subject presented in the movie in order to not find it ludicrous and intellectually insulting.

The writer/director doesn't seem to have a clue about either subject presented in the movie. If you're going to present a story you should first know something about the subject.

First the depiction of Justine's depression is frankly insulting to people who actually do suffer from depression. Her symptoms bare no resemblance to depression. She strikes me as being a self absorbed heroin addict perhaps with a dissociative disorder.

Second, if you have more than a third grade education you should know that the earth would have been torn apart somewhere around halfway through the movie. You do realize that something as small as the moon has enormous gravitational effects on the earth and another planet sized object would have simply torn the planet apart halfway through the movie.

If you liked it you're obviously no different than people who go to movies just for the special effects because all this movie had going for it were a few good artistic shots... a very few.

Well said. The whole "rogue planet hiding behind the sun" just killed me. And no news reports about it? Cmon! It would be all over the web if a planet were hurtling towards us. We were fast forwarding through this turd like crazy. All it is, is a turd wrapped in pretty pictures...

I appreciate what you wrote and agree that the beginning is ridiculous with our lead character suffering from debilitating depression. What does it have to do with the overall death of our planet? Either way, we (fiends and self) discussed whether we are alone out here. Words like ego, chaos, fear, primitive ... the film provided a healthy discussion on whether there is life after death. I enjoyed the second half much more than the first half. I'll have to see the notes on the film to see WHAT was the tie in exactly on Justine's depression and her I KNOW ALL crystal ball attitude.

I agree planets in close proximity to each other have a huge gravitational affect on each other but movies are not usually based in fact. Movies help bring dreams to life. If you would like facts I would suggest watching a nice documentary, there can be plenty of facts in those types movies. Second, there are many forms of depression and drug use is a prevalent factor with a number of people who have depression and manic depressive disorders.

Did you find it a bad story, the acting off, or beauty/fluidity of the cinematography abhorred?Try to relax a bit and work on your review writing. You are coming across as basher than critic making a review, that is to say, if you have something else negatively to add to the review.

Um... genius... you didn't actually reply to anyone so maybe turn down your over the top pretentious attitude and work on your own skills.

It is a masterpiece. Not everyone will understand it because, yes, they are stupid. Simple as that.

This as a movie for the lowest of the low. It's for the reality TV show junky who is wanting to test their ability to sit through a 2 hour movie. If you made it 5 minutes without wanting to beat Justine (Kirsten Dunst) even more senseless than she already was kudos to you. And after she spends the first hour drooling stumbling and mumbling incoherently we move to the true absurdity made specially for the science and common sense challenged. A planet that "hid" behind the sun? An object that drifts so close to the earth that it appears many times larger than the moon and yet... nothing? Has the writer never been to school or did he simply drop out at.... okay I was going to say third grade but even a third grader would say this makes no sense. And to place the cherry on the anti-common sense sundae, he has the person who he has set up as the story's representative of education and science suddenly commit suicide so that the apparently heroin addicted Justine can come out of her stupor just long enough to be arrogance and condescending. The one high point of the movie is that character of Justine is finally, finally dead. This movie is a gift to the willfully ignorant in society, wrapped with a bow so they can pat themselves on the back and feel good.
