The story of sexual deception has been overplayed in movies, this was the case here, but the movie was redeemed by the unpredictability and twists at the end. By utilizing some interesting film techniques, story twist and playing with the theme Woody toys with his audience. He makes us believe that we will be able to predict what happens, which is not the case.
The story definitely has a theme and some philosophical ideas, as the Woody Allen movies tend to have, and for this movie it was particularly dark. The movie starts out rather mellow, it slowly builds, grabs your interest, and gets your heart racing. The movie was definitely derived from the book the main character reads in the beginning, Crime and Punishment.
This movie lacked the witticisms, biting satire, one-liners, jokes and even slapstick that the previous Woody Allen movies contained. It was therefore not as good as some of his greats. This movie also seemed to lack the realistic flavor of some of the previous Woody Allen movies. It also lacked some of the beautriful visuals of other Woody's movies. This movie seemed more like (I guess) a typical Hollywood movie and less like a Woody Allen movie, which is a negative, but there were definitely hints of him in there.
Woody Allen always makes his characters very interesting and this was the case here. His characters have substance, are three dimensional with many different sides to them, which is realistic and gets you interested in them. Both the lead actors did an excellent job and were very believable and realistic.
