Maybe someday someone who hates great movies/musicals such as this one will give me a good, valid reason they think so other than "I hate it... it sucks... ewwy ewwy ewwy.". This was excellent as both a film and a musical. Julie Andrews' debut as an actress couldn't have been better. The chemistry between the entire cast was one you rarely see in movies ever. Dick Van Dyke brought the humor, giving this movie a lighter feel where David Tomlinson brings the exact opposite in his character George Banks. The story is very well balanced and was the first of its kind, which eventually would go on to inspire other films such as Nanny McPhee.
I love the musical element that was added to this movie. I love musicals though, so that's no surprise. The songs are extremely catchy and fit cleverly into the story. People who don't care for musicals and their sometimes cheesy music are most likely not going to like Mary Poppins.
The one thing this film was lacking in was visual effects, though that was mostly on account of restricted space. Considering this entire film was shot in a studio and many of the effects that exist today weren't around back then... it was great for what is was.
