I saw this for the first time, and came away thinking there are few movies you will see that were as touching as this one. Whether you own a dog or not, if you have any type of heart then the last third of the movie and especially the ending will leave you fighting back tears.
I do not have kids, but have read some of the reviews on here and would agree that this probably is not the best movie for young children. There are adult themes throughout, and the last half hour of the movie will definitely sadden or even traumatize kids especially if they have a dog of their own. A PG-13 rating would have probably been more appropriate in this case.
While Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston have never garnered tremendous respect as serious actors, both gave very real and heartfelt performances. They both show strikingly realistic qualities as a couple starting a family, and trying to deal with the frustrations and difficult decisions that can arise with it. Owen Wilson especially showed some real character depth & warmth with his connection to Marley and gave in my opinion, his best performance overall.
Marley & Me brings some laughs and some heartbreak as well. If you own a dog, you will definitely be able to relate to the good times and the growing pains from puppy to adult portrayed here. If you do not you will still come away with a much stronger appreciation for man's best friend.
