I’m going to give this movie a solid 4 stars. The majority of the movie worked really well; it was suspenseful, it was scary and there were some jump in your seat moments. Both of the little girls did a really good job with the acting. One of the reasons it worked so well is because for the first part of the movie, you don’t ever see Mama clearly. You see shadows, you see quick images jump out and then are gone. It’s suggestion and innuendo, and to me that’s always what’s worked best in scary movies anyway. Our imaginations fill in the blanks and scare us much better than any Hollywood makeup can.

I liked the movie right up until the last ten minutes. I didn’t like the ending. Mama went from being evil ghost to misunderstood apparition. And that just didn’t work for me. It just didn’t seem to flow with the rest of the movie.

Still, I would recommend the movie. It had some good scares and thrills. And the horror was “soft” enough that you could watch the movie with teenage children. In the tradition of Woman in Black, The Possession and other “horror” movies, it is PG-13. But these are the kinds of scary movies I like. I don’t care for slasher movies or movies with over the top gore. And you won’t find any of that in this movie.
