At the time I first saw this movie, my husband had recently died after 13 years of our surviving as an interracial dating and married couple in New Mexico during the late 70's to the early 90's. Many issues portrayed in the film relating to cultural differences in slang, dress, behavior, and even curiosity and sexual tension between black women and white men were incredibly familiar! In addition, I have wondered in years past: what would the progressive thinkers back in the day (who had babies without benefit of a relationship partner) do when their batch of test tube babies grew up to be fatherless teens?
Well, this is not a serious exploration of this subject in any respect. However, since Whoopie Goldberg, Ted Danson, Will Smith and Nia Long are some of my favorite performers, I was definitely game to check it out. I throughly enjoyed the romance, parent-child issues, cultural awareness and just plain fun of this movie. And, the soundtrack ended up on my "must buy" list. Yeah, it was a bit corny and predictable, and some of the solutions, either way over-stated or way too simplistic---with a couple of things that were down-right dumb thrown in for good measure---but, I loved it.
I believe that my husband and I had a rather unique relationship for that time, because I now see many more interracial couples like us (black women with white men) than there used to be. At any rate, I can always count on enjoying this film as I stroll down memory lane during "the good ole days." It makes me miss my husband, but it makes me feel closer to him too. Any other long-time interracial couples relate to any of this?
