The acting from the beautiful Giovanna mezzorgiono was wonderful as she was in FACING WINDOW. The other actors were great too.
But this movie was a waste of time in my opinion and it should have been given more time to develop a good screenplay. The potential was there with the terrific scenes and atmosphere but nope, they rushed it and made a cheesy, laughable movie.
Florentino fancies fermina and woos her. It was sweet enough but his poetry and the acting was a little melodramatic. This works well in theatre but for a movie where acting is supposed to be “real”, its too over the top.
Ferminas father rejects this and they move away to south America, leaving florentino heartbroken. They vow to reunite when she returns however.
When fermina does return, for some weird reason, she has fallen out of love with florentino and says “that love we had was an illusion”. Why does she become so cold? God knows. But hey, this sort of thing happens so we don’t need a detailed explanation. Cool so far.
Heres where things happen too suddenly. A rich doctor woos fermina and though hating him at first, falls in love with him soon. Why? God know again. I saw no character development and no building of the relationship.
In real life, men can get heartbroken too over lost loves and can cry which is fair enough. I certainly have. But for gods sake do we have to see a babbling idiot? florentino weeps when he sees fermina no longer loves him and has now married the doctor but honestly man, his crying was far too much and he was simply a pathetic moron, sucking his thumb. Yes, sucking his friggin thumb.
A few boring and jerky scenes later, florentino turns into a super womaniser. Ok fine, fermina has dumped you so you are single. Nothing wrong with having other women now.
I myself have had many girls but florentino supposedly has had over 600!! WTF???? Is that even possible? Bear in mind he was already over 50 here.
Skip to many years later and thye are all 70 years old. Ferminas doctor hubby dies and florentino shows up on the day of his funeral. For some weeeeeeird reason, fermina hates florentino and curses him. This is where we can see desperation in a weak script. When the script is weak, throw in some dramatic moments where people scream at each other for no apparent reason.
After cursing him, fermina tells her daughter “florentino is an honourable man. I known him since he was a boy”. Ok, so please explain to us why you cursed him then miss fermina? Hmmmm? Yup, the film was that bewildering.
Florentino finally woos fermina back and they make love on his ship. The end. The acting was terrific but the movie really should have been better. And for petes sake, no need to indulge in excessive sex scenes ok mike newell director? This is not some porn film. Get some damn morals.
