Daniel Day Lewis does such an incredible job of protraying Lincoln I felt like I was there in the White House witnessing history being made. The surroundings were well done and the language used during that time well reproduced. Surely Sally Field will get an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the unfortunate Mary Todd Lincoln. The supporting characters were all fleshed out and well played.
Abe Lincoln was the first president we have a lot of photos of so it was amazing how much like him Mr. Lewis became. He walked like him, talked in his folksy manner and the film made it clear that to many of his contemporaries he was an annoying figure instead of a hero. We can revere him from an historical viewpoint, but this film makes it very clear that he was not revered by everyone at the time.
His practical political horsetrading needs to be emulated now. Perhaps some of the Republican representatives would like to be appointed to the State Department or get their children into government jobs and could be persuaded to quit blocking progress.
