This review comes later than many others and I have been disappointed in some of the reviews. I think a lot of folks thought they were going to see a Civil War movie. This slice of about 4 - 5 months in Lincoln's administration was outstanding.
I know Steven Spielberg had a difficult time getting this project to the big screen. Audiences today are used to non-stop action, not a thinking movie.
I especially enjoyed seeing how the back room politics and arm twisting brought the 13th Amendment to the final vote. Hopefully it makes people want to learn more. I heartily recommend Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals" because it demonstrates just how good Lincoln was and why he rates as one of the best presidents we've ever had.
The ensemble of actors was better than outstanding. Led by Daniel Day Lewis' interpretation of Lincoln they were all "spot on".
See this movie, think about it and then rent or buy it when it comes out.
