Just saw, “Lincoln.” I have to say that I am disappointed. I was expecting a full-on biopic. If you enjoy a movie that is nothing other than dialogue and brilliant stage acting for almost three hours then this is the movie for you. If you are expecting a biopic of Lincoln as the title suggests then you will be disappointed.
The movie should be renamed, “The 13th Amendment” or “Lincoln’s Last Four Months.” This movie has absolutely nothing to do with the life of Lincoln aside from his last four months as the title insinuates. It tells you nothing about the man when he was younger, the strained relationship with him and his father, as a lawyer who passed the BAR without having been to law school, his many amazing cases as a lawyer, his losing a few reelections as a Congressman, and ultimately his election to President. This only had to do with the 13th Amendment’s passage.
This movie was not a movie; it was a play. I realize this was based off a novel, but I felt this should have been on Broadway or in the Lincoln Center. There was little in the way of background. However, the dialogue was amazing and truly represented the poetic dialect from the 19th century. But, again, this should have been a play.
