The title should have been the 13th amendment. The acting was good, but did not seem to fit the history behind the man. The co-stars did an excellent job, especially Sally Field and James Spader. But the movie lacked depth, and was similiar to Spielbergs other epic War Horse - computer generated scenes and no location shots. DDL make-up kept changing, though the time period was only over a month.
