Amazing film. Not without problems but overall outstanding.
I grew up in Illinois and Lincoln was one of my childhood heroes. So this movie had a very strong emotional resonance with me. Daniel Day Lewis is amazing as Lincoln. One of the best acting performances I've ever seen. The only other's I can compare it too would be Philip Seymour Hoffman in "In Cold Blood" or Marion Cotillard in "La Vie En Rose". Sally Fields and Joseph Gordon Levitt were also very good. The best praise I can give the film is that it shows the truth. The reality of life during those times and the necessity of political compromise and the strains on Lincoln and his family. There are things I did not like. The opening scene with Lincoln speaking to a group of black and white soldiers is very sentimental and cheesy and fake.
