The Life of Pi is definently thought provoking and transending. Most of the reviews focus on the Spiritual and Philosophical aspects of the movie...of which there are plenty.
Heres what i walked out of the movie thinking/feeling:
(SPOILERS...KIND OF)
the boy was put though a deeply tramatic experience. To cope, he had to dissociate himself, and also find strength and maturity extremely fast and prematurely for his age. So, he dissociated by creating the story in his mind of the animals he interacted with on the lifeboat...instead of the real people they represented....the tiger...was a symbol of aggression and strength which he had not yet come of age to mature into yet...but needed to in order to survive the ordeal. He was scared of the tiger at first, but over time he began enbrace it as a needed friend. He needed to become the "tiger" to kill the cook who killed his mom....in reality. We find strength we never knew we had sometimes in extrodinary circumstances. In the end...when he found civilization...the tiger left into the forest...the boy cried at the loss...he in essence became the "boy" again and let the "tiger" go.
The aspect of dissociation by vicims of tramatic abuse is well documented....separating your mind from the situation protects the mind from insanity...its a self defense mechanism. In severe cases there whats called multiple personality disorder where a person..actually "becomes" someone else strong enough to deal with what ever abusing/tramatic situation they are exposed to.
the movie is heavily symbolic, psychological, spiritual, and thought provoking.
a master piece imho
