Loved it.

The first time I saw the trailer for this movie I was enthralled...I learned it was based on a book so I got the book and read it and loved it. (I learned the author of the book was inspired to write it by reading a book called Max and the Cats, so perhaps I should read the book that inspired this story). Back to the movie. The movie was everything I hoped it would be and more. Visually, every scene is beautifully shot. I watched the 3-D version and agree with the 3-D critics that I didn't really notice anything groundbreaking going on with that, so I am not sure what it added to the whole experience...would have to see the 2-D version for comparison. As I already knew the storyline, this just brought everything to life for me. The unknown actor was a great touch as you didn't have any preconceived notions about the character, he was a blank slate....he did an absolutely amazing job giving depth and personality to a young man in peril, as did the young boy and the older version. Richard Parker, the tiger was a triumph in CGI...absolutely captivating.

I can see where some might have been expecting something completely different, or might have been bored with the experience, as this is not an action packed movie...it is more about just taking a journey. The spiritual message is sweet...in that there are many religious beliefs, which tell many stories...but they can all lead us closer in our quest to know God. Many, including some who attended with me missed that message, but appreciated it once I pointed it out.

I hope this one wins an Oscar...it was a great effort, perhaps not worth all the hype, but a great effort all the same.
