Yann Martel mentions five religions. They are Buddhist (Chinese sailor), Hindu (Pi & Mom), Jewish (Hebrew ship name), Christian (Pi's visit to priest in India), and Islam. Jesus said the Laws and the Prophets could be summed up with "Love God & Love thy neighbor as thyself." He also believes in foregiveness. Martel shows Piscene surviving by becoming like the biggest beast in the Law of the Jungle, a tiger. Cooperation fails on the lifeboat. It becomes kill and eat or be killed and eaten. The lame sailor and the vulnerable, Pi's mother, are killed and eaten by the awful French cook. Pi kills and eats the cook to survive, in revenge, and because he is hungry. How long does revenge last? Some violent people will serve it ice cold, and not even to the perpetrator, but to the entire group of people they view responsible. Will the human race learn to settle territorial disputes and share food and water without becoming like hyenas, tigers, and cannibals? There are no atheists in fox holes would be my take from Patel. Today is Pi Day 3.14. The questions and answers raised in "Life of Pi" like the number, are irrational (not governed by reason) and go on forever......
