Good story line, smooth flow, and above all stunningly beautiful scenes. It's like going to a high quality 3D show in a natural/science museum, only it's for 2 hours. DO find a good 3D theater though! It matters.
Life of Pi may not be a life changing masterpiece, but it definitely has all the good stuffs to give viewers an engaging and rewarding experience. Few movies can get me to sit through the entire movie biting my nail. The unexpected turn in the end also got me thinking for a while after the movie. Recommend to families with kids above 12.
