Okay, full disclosure: I'm crazy about Mandy Moore. She's beautiful, talented and she does this thing with her face...nevermind. I'm riddled with ADD - you'll get used to it.
My problem with this movie isn't with Miss Moore, it's with maybe the most versatile actor on the planet - Robin Williams. Case in point: Did you see Mrs. Doubtfire? For me, that was the perfect example of RW's versatility as an actor. He can be a fast-talking funny man and he can show vulnerability. Here, what we get is a cliched Robin Williams (who really should be the emotional centre of the film) as a priest. This movie could have been a bad cartoon for 3 year olds. That's not to say that this role couldn't be played by a comedian - Jim Carrey would have screwed it up as well if he'd decided Ace Ventura became a holy man. This is the fatal flaw of the movie.
The other big problem is that if you strip away Robin Williams, Mandy Moore is becoming the Elvis of romantic comedies, isn't she? She's always paired with a barely recognizable actor with barely recognizable acting skills. Her costars are basically the boy next door giggolos (granted, I'm a straight guy) who end up winning her over by being persistent and having a personal trainer. The danger with Mandy is that she's so adorable she's perfect foil for really bad romantic comedies.
Bottom line: You have a world-class actor who can play any role and a princess of an actress who both deserve a better script. And Mandy...you're more than just an angsty Juliet who wants to fall in love.
