The reason so many people talk about the crying and tissues is that this is one of the most depressing movies of all time. Well done, but depressing as #$%$. And the song "I dreamed a dream" ... you'd think a song with that title would be uplifting and happy -- and you would be sooooo wrong. It's the most depressing song I ever heard. Listen to the words and watch Ann Hathaway sing it in context, and you will realize why "miserable" is in the title.
The acting was good. The singing was good. The presentation was excellent. If you can watch a movie and just appreciate those elements, you will be very impressed. But if you get into the story and characters, be prepared for 2 1/2 of the most depressing hours of your life.
The only thing that broke, a little, the depressing tension was Sasha Baron Cohen.
