Something I have noticed in my years watching films is that watching movies with different groups of people produces different reactions... Kind of common sense. I have watched 'Kung Fu Hustle', as of today, three times. The first two times I was watching it with friends of mine that were my age. The third time was with my mom. What I noticed that was different in the reactions was that my friends found it to be a very funny movie... My mom really did not. The reason for this, I think, is that the humor in the film tends to be brutal... Not the kind of things mothers laugh at. The comedy in the film, if you look at it, usually involves somebody getting hurt or killed. Dispite this, the film itself is not incredibly violent. Now, what must be said is that the fight scenes are extremely well coreographed. They are one of the high points of the film. You will have fun watching these fight scenes unless you are jaded and hate the extreme embellishment of the fighting styles. But what I found in common between all three viewings? The film is just fun to watch. The film's purpose is to just show an unabashed good time. And it provides that... In spades.
