I'm disappointed that the book was not closely followed. Why does Hollywood and Disney Studios stretch their Liberal License so far?! No wonder the movie attendences are steadily falling.

After reading the book do i only begin to understand that people felt the movie did not add up to as much as it could have been. Even without following the book the movie is one of the best movie stories I have seen in a long time. On top of that it was not crude, volgur or something i would be embarresed to tell my children I enjoyed watching. After reading the following books I am even more dissappointed the movie did not do well as the follow up book is even more impressive. If you enjoyed the movie you should read the books as they are even more masterful and wonderfully writen to boot.

if you hate 'these movies' I have this totally insane and wild idea for you: Don't go see them. Go see something you actually like. I hate cowards who get on line and use hide behind the 'skirts' of the internet to say insulting things to people that would get them slapped in a face to face conversation. Ever ask yourself how much time you waste in your life dwelling on what's wrong with the rest of us?

It took awhile for it to dawn on me that this was from Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter of Mars" book series. They were classics when I was a kid and I'm in my sixties now. Somehow I remembered the John Carter name and goggled it. Now I have to see the movie.

I saw this movie, it is great. Lots of action going on. It should have done much better at the box office. Someone screwed up. I don't remember seeing very many ad's or commericals for this move. To bad.

Trailer looks decent, word of mouth / critics killed this one before it hit theatres. I have to say just from first impressions, the title makes me think I'm going to go see a car salesman. I've never read / heard of the books, so I think many ppl might have been turned off.

Can't wait to see it. Read the entire series in the early sixties. I agree with the comment about when honor, morales, and being selfless meant something, and not worrying political correctness.. I encourage everone to read more of Edgar Rice Boroughs. Something the critics should do if they could read.

I don't understand why anyone would think political correctness has anything to do with the film's misfire at the box office. It's like you're grasping for a reason that happens to suit your own personal prejudices.

I would like to give this movie 3 1/2 stars its better than 3 but less than 4. The movie is very entertaining at some points your at the edge of your seat. But this movie is a remake of to. The whole story reminded me of flash Gordon. Only the 80s kids would not know the difference but kids born in the 60,and 70 remember Flash Gordon the movie. I don't know if this book came out before Flash Gordon but Flash Gordon came out before this movie.

Flash Gordon? Apparently you need to go watch it again because they are nothing alike.
    • WTF 1 month 18 days ago
Actually, Flash Gordon is a rip off of Edgar Rice Burroughs', wait for it.... John Carter of Mars.

Yes. You've got it backward. Star Wars. Flash Gordon, etc. based their story plots on John Carter.

OK Rose I do not think you realized you are on the reviews for "John Carter." Or at least I hope you clicked on the wrong link, because apparently you didn't see the same movie the folks in my theater saw.

My wife does not really like science fiction and the first thing she said coming out of the theater was; "We definitely have to buy that one on Blue Ray!"

I do not look for GWTW or Ben Hur when I spend my $19, just "adequate" entertainment. I saw this movie with about 3 hours sleep in 2 days [working] & had no problem staying awake.

Excellent movie, and it definitely beat the heck out of 90% of the crap today.

    Do another one Disney!

While I haven't seen this film yet, I HAVE read the books, and I've looked forward to this one from the first teaser I saw. To say that you don't want to memorize when you go to the movies is fine, but simply standing on the "the principle actor is the "good Guy"" philosophy makes, in my opinion, a lousy movie. I could nearly put this in the same category that I put LOTR in. I knew many folks who'd never read the books, and thought the films were "so-so". Of course there were also those who saw the films, read the books, THEN saw the films again, and came away with a bigger love for the "Whole Enchilada" as it were. You need to give it a chance.

I read ERB as a child, every Tarzan book I could get my hands on. I had no idea that this was one of his stories, until his name was first mentioned in the movie. I have been looking forward to this film since the first time I saw a trailer for it. Saw it Friday. Loved it. Absolutely transported. Spent Saturday reading "A Princess of Mars" on Gutenberg, and listening to Kashmir. :D Glad we saw this instead of Ghost Rider.

Agreed - I can't imagine a better film being made from the source material. As much as I love ERB and the Martian novels, they are dated and wouldn't fly very well - pulp today needs to be smart as well as entertaining, and this was both.

Great movie fun to watch. The 3D was awesome thruout the movie. This movie does not dissapoint and i definitely am looking forward to the DVD. Not a lot of blood or gore, but great special effects and actions.

I can't get over some people that gave the movie a bad review because they thought it ripped off Star Wars and Avatar. Get an education people. This story was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years ago.

People rating John Carter badly are just CRAZY.. My entire Family loved this movie much better than many other Sci-Fi movies

One reason the books were so detailed for each segment is that they were written in serial form in popular magazine of the time. Each chapter was a story and cliffhanger. We got great details on Tars and Carter's friendship. The Princess and the Virginian play very coy chapter after chapter, and like the movie, bursts loose at the end. At 2.24 hours, this movie needs a sequel to enlarge on the culture ERB built on Mars. The black pirates are going to be a challenge in this age of enlightment, but as with the Red Men of Mars and the White Apes, Green Tharks, we might as well have Black Pirates and besides there is redemption.
