Rock Opera to Musical Play to Film!

star55

While not the first Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar was a ground breaker. The concept is based on the last seven days in the life of Jesus, and the conflict between Jesus and Judas. The Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice production was first heard as concept album; they feared it would not be accepted as a stage musical. After it's initial success as an album, it was adapted as a musical play, and in 1973 it was adapted to film. The Norman Jewison film updated the timeline to modern day, and was filmed in the Holy Land of Israel. It starred film newcomers Teddy Neely as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas, and Yvonne Ellimone as Mary Magdalene. As one of the first new generation musicals it was a delight to both the eyes and ears of audiences.
