A film by Nancy Meyers. She wrote and directed "It's Complicated". Stars Meryl Streep as Jane Alexander, who does what she does. And Steve Martin as Adam Schaffer, the shnook she settles for: always the second choice. And Alec Baldwin as Jake Adler: will he follow Marlon Brando's lead and eat himself out of a job?

This is a romantic comedy, in the sense that romance tinkers with reality and comedy in the sense that it sponsor laughter. Jake has a knockout young wife, but finds himself back with Jane his aging first wife: 2nd wife is busy trying to add to her brood, and is on a schedule. This ain't what Jake signed up for.

The plot seems pasted together from old movies: Joan Crawford owned a thriving restaurant, Shelley Winters sat by her pots while Monty Clift romanced Liz Taylor. Nancy Meyer: give us a break on the next one. "It's Complicated" is needlessly complicated. Begin at the beginning. A garden party. Whose garden, and what's the occasion? Who are all these characters you throw at us, and what is their relationship? You use alot of footage to go there. We do get 2nd wife early on, but out of place you give her, sexpot you give her, but essential to your story you don't give her until events are well along. Some kind of tease? Very sloppy work.

To the point: more of the 2nd wife, a very motivated lady. When the cat's away, the rats will play. And your kids are cardboard.
