That is probably the only thing I can say about this morbid, off-beat film. Not that they went over the top with the gloominess of the subject matter, its just that without the comedy this film would have been unbearable. That is why this film works.
The performances from all of the cast are excellent. Colin Farrell in particular does a fine job alongside Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, who we probably expect good performances from.
The behind-the-camera work is also pretty good, considering that it is a first-time director involved in this project. Still, I feel as though he has given his cinematographer and editors much room to breath and places his confidence in them. Here is a guy whose next film I want to see.
Overall, this is a profound film that deals directly with the angst and guilt involved in killing. The emotions run deep and many moments are horrifying. This film, despite its comedy, takes death seriously and hits its mark.
