Meiocre and Disappointing

I wanted to like this movie. I really did. I like Jim Carrey. I also tend to like movies that bring out the minority views in society. So when I heard that Jim Carrey was playing a gay con man that meets his partner in prison, I thought, "Man, this could be great."

Sadly I was wrong. The movie purports to be a comedy, but never fills that role. It was more of a rambling narrative that lacks plot, and although at times I started to feel some emotion for the characters in the film, I was quickly brought back down to the humdrum nature of the film.

The film focuses on Carrey as the lead, and yet I felt like I never got to know him. I never really got to see the genious of his character. The film spends the majority of its time giving me background on the main character, and yet throughout the film, I wished that I had been shown more detail of how he did something. It felt like I was reading headlines the whole time, and I never actually got to read an article. Additionally it's not like the deleted scenes gave me any more insight into the character, so it seems the writing and directing are to blame for underwhelming me.

For his part, Ewan McGregor does an amazing job in the film. His character was totally believable. This contrasted with Jim Carrey, who I never believed as a gay man. Though I must say, I didn't see any of Carrey's usual funny gags in this movie which was a welcome relief as his schtick has not changed in years.

Visually, the movie was nice, but never amazing. Most of the actors were very competent in what was a very boring movie. I laughed a few times, and I felt sad once. But the feeling I kept having was, "when are we going to get to the action, and how long is this movie?" It's 102 minutes if you were wondering, but don't waste your time.
