Two straw hats in summer

star33

Two distant cousins reconnect at a summer home away from the DC spotlight. He is the polio stricken president,FDR,she is Daisy a dimwitted gal lookiing for excitement in her otherwise dull exsistence. The two begin an intimate relationship in the midst of summer in the countryside, wild flowers abloom, the sun beating down on their straw hats and driving along in a convertible as "moonlight serenade" music plays. One weekend, a visit from the newly crowned king and queen of England has the summer home in a tizzy.Daisy is upset that she isnt included in the festivities and later learns that their are other mistresses that FDR has which further upsets her for she wants him all to herself. But the royal visit is a success and a kind of 'hot dog' diplomacy is born.

FDR and the king also share a birthmark on thier visage, rather strange and drink beyond thier limits.

The movie plays out slowly like a game of chess yet Murray captures the essense of FDR in his easy and relaxed style but having an underlying domineering streak,

The movie has lovely country scenes perfect for conducting an affair between the cousins that wasnt known till both their deaths. One has to wonder what the purpose of retelling the movie is.
