Classic romantic comedy with depresed British artist traveling to the small Maine town of Hope to get over being jilted by his fiance. There he meets a young "live-wire" who slowly brings joy back to his life...
Colin Firth plays the role of artist Colin Ware very well, in his usual role (owned by himself and Hugh Grant) of the handsome but slightly stuffy Englishman. Heather Graham also plays the quirky American Mindi well and there seems some nice chemistry between the two. The star of the movie, however, is Minnie Driver as Vera, Colin' British finace. She somehow manages to come across as both manipulative yet loveable and certainly the movie really picks up when she comes over the pond. The small town locals are also very nicely played
There is some excellent parts to this movie, with some smart observations and classic British humor (such as the hilarious golf course scene).
With some small rewrites I think this would have been a great movie. For example, it would have been great to see more interaction between Vera and the Mayor, with maybe Vera taking his heart and taking over running the town.
Nevertheless, overall this is a very nice romance movie with some very nice touches of British-style humor. Definitely not to level of a "Love Actually," but still very good. Not everyone's "cup of tea" I am sure, but very refreshing to this Brit ex-pat.
