This is not a movie trying to make a statement or having any underlying political or social subtext. It is a cool action movie with a lot of blood and guts (literal guts). The gore is actually very realistic and avoids the "so bloody it's funny" stereotype (think Quentin Tarantino).
The story is pretty predictable. It starts with the standard Hansel and Gretel fairy tale, but way more cool. The witch looks evil and you find yourself rooting for the kids to burn that crazy B****. Then we jump to "some time later" in a town that seems to resemble the Burn the Witch scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where villagers and urging the town leaders to "Burn Her!!!"
Hansel and Gretel enter, all bad ass like, and decide if she is in fact a witch or not, then inform the townspeople that they are there to help stop the witch who has been taking their children.
The story continues and adds some twists to the original fairy tale. We get to see what really happened to their parents, why their parents left them in the woods, and how the witch in the town has ties to their past.
I thought it was well made, great effects, and an engaging storyline. People should not expect to see this movie as groundbreaking or a blockbuster hit, its just bloody good fun.
Rated R for a lot of blood, decapitations, burnings, F bombs, and one scene of butt and boobs female nudity (entering into a pond)
3 starts because it's good, but come on...it's no Matrix.
