I did not go to this movie expecting Oscar worthy material. Nor did I go expecting some deep , thought provoking twist on an old classic . The twist is pretty obvious...Hansel and Gretel are now witch hunters and they carry big weapons.
What I did find was a fun, occasionally funny part Western/part fractured fairytale/part steampunk spree. The story goes that Hansel and Gretel defeat their first witch and grow up to be witch hunters, saving towns and rescuing children. Along the way, they develop a wry sense of humor, a heck of an arsenal, and a close bond as brother and sister. There were a lot of elements to this movie that I enjoyed. I liked the actors, I enjoyed watching the characters and the different bonds that were developed, I enjoyed the fight scenes and the effects. It was gory without being scary or too campy. And while the twist was a little predictable, it at least had a twist and more of a plot that some of these types of movies.
It was a fun, violent romp through the woods shooting up witches. And I will certainly be buying this when it comes out.
