To be or not to be, that is the question

If you have never seen Hamlet before, you will probably think this movie is interesting. If you are an experienced Hamlet aficionado, don't waste your time. What could have been an interesting idea and setting for Hamlet is mutilated into a piece of crap. There are probably too many worst moments to pick a few, but I'll try here.

First of all, someone needs to tell Hawke that Hamlet isn't just depressed and pouty all the time, he displays a range of emotions, which Hawke does not in any way, shape or form, deliver. Once in a while he will switch from a low mumble to a lower mumble, however, that's probably all the emotion you'll get.

Ophelia was very much the same. She is constantly pouting and you don't get the feeling she really cares about Hamlet. The "madness" scene made me want to throw the stupid movie across the room. She didn't seem crazy, just mad and throwing a temper tantrum. Her only attempt at madness was crossing her eyes. Oh, god. It was like the director told her, "Ummm, you're mad, cross your eyes!" Yeah. Did not work.

Most of the other people are forgettable mostly for their boringness. And don't even get me started on the fencing scene. As an obsessed fencing freak, I noticed they were wearing foil jackets but USING epees! You think they could have bothered to look that up. And when Laertes pulls out the gun and shoots Hamlet that was just random. If they wanted to gave a gunfight they could have started with a gunfight.

The only question for this movie is, did the director try to make it this bad? It couldn't have been an accident.
