The Die Hard series has been great fun, with Bruce Willis at his wise-cracking, super cop best. There were interesting stories, villainous villains (who can forget Alan Rickman in the original) to play against Willis - you almost rooted for both.
Not so in this film. The director and producer were apparently enchanted with special effects - which are quite good, but become a bit wearisome after a while. They are no substitute for an interesting plot - which this film lacks. Indeed, most scenes are implausible, even for a Hollywood script.
The wise-cracking wit in the McClane character has dulled. Perhaps it is time for John McClane to be retired - joining Stallone's "Rocky" as a wonderful memory that can no longer be resurected.
For Willis fans, if you miss this film, don't worry - just remember the earlier editions.
