It never occurred to me to rent “Girlfight” until I wanted something for comparison with “Million Dollar Baby.” “Girlfight” turned out to be an unexpected treat. Unlike “Million…,” “Girlfight” presents a thoughtful and more-than-plausible story of why a young woman would aspire to be a prizefighter.
The star, Michelle Rodriguez, is strapping enough to be believable. She is second only to James Gandolfini in her ability to change her demeanor from warm and approachable to menacing, in the twinkling of an eye.
The unusual premise makes for several truly novel plot twists. The film is visually interesting, thanks to resourceful use of location shooting. The controversy in the wake of “Million…,” will do a good thing if “Girlfight” gets a second look on its account.
