G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra(2009)- User Reviews

Okay in my childhood growing up in the 1980's, I was a devoted fan of the G.I. Joe franchise. I had the action figures, watched the cartoons and even dressed up as some of the characters on Halloween. Yes, those were the days being a kid in the 1980's. During that era, the toys that was marketed and the cartoons provided for us were beyond awesomeness. But when I went to the theaters two years ago to see "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra", seeing the Joe's clad in their mechanical suits, I was having my doubts about seeing them for the first time in nearly twenty years. I though it was just another lame attempt by Hollywood to cash in another poorly depicted movie based on the classic 80's iconic action toy/cartoon much like they did with the awful "Transformers" movies.
Sure there was some cheesy elements in the movie, but it's still overall a highly enjoyable movie. It wasn't intended to garner any Oscar nominations or to make you think once the ending credits roll. It's really cashing in on the solid action, the scintillating arsenal of weapons and gadgetry and the classic struggles between good and evil. There is never a dull moment for any watered down subplots or tacky emotionally enhancements to its intentions. Sure there's a storyline to keep us all up to date, but it's action that is the foundation of the movie. There's no origins of the characters with the exceptions of the occasional tidbits of their backgrounds to get an understanding of them and how they came about. I guess many were very disgruntled that they wanted a beginning story of the rivalry of how the Joe's and Cobra became enemies and how both groups came to prominence. Sure this movie was a popcorn movie, but it was meant to be that way plus to reminisce about the glory days when the 1980's was about watching the cartoons, collecting the merchandise and reading the comics.
For those whiners who ostracized about the holes or the lack of anything believable. I mean what gives??? I mean the cartoon show was imagination all the way. Everything is pure fantasy. And sure as enjoyable as it was I will come out to say that the special effects left much to be desired. There were a few effects that looked pure hokey. But that didn't spoil the broth like most of the naysayers said. And I have to say that this is one of those movies I had no shame of ever watching.
