Humanity.

star55

Too sum it up, this film holds the essence of humanity. The people involved are not good or evil, and the situations are not truly good or evil, except for possibly the "husband" at the end, and the film in subtle humor maintains an array of complex emotions and past history, showing the final act, the confession of a tremendous pain held intentionally by a man out of guilt and loss.
It is well written in that it puts no more on the screen than needs to be on the screen, yet holds so much emotional depth that without quality actors, the film could not hold itself up -- and that is were exceptional character actors, Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, and Lucas black come in.
They make this movie memorable, and one of my favorites. I cherish any storyline that evolves humanness throughout it's arc, not shortchanging it for dramatic effect, and in so doing, creates a much more human drama.
