"A kiss on the hand may be quite continental..."

So states Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) singing the first verse of one of the most famous popular tunes of all time, a song which declares that though love is all very well and good Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friends.

The story is fun and light-hearted, and revolves around two show girls taking a holiday.

Lorelei Lee, is engaged to a rich tycoon named Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan) who's father vigorously opposes the match, and has come up with a stall tactic to delay the wedding.

Out of guilt, Esmond has offered to treat his fiance to a trip to Paris, on the condition that she take a chaperone, more specifically her best friend, Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), who remains up-beat and optimistic despite the fact that she's been unlucky in love.

But all that's about to change with the advent of a man named Ernie Malone (Elliott Reid) who aside from taking an immediate interest in Dorothy, has an agenda of his own concerning the women.

Also there's the unwitting prescence of Sir Francis 'Piggy' Beekman, whose possession of a diamond tiara, sends Lorelei's mind into a plot to obtain the ornament.

Marylin Monroe is adorable and sintillating in this movie (as really only she can be). Jane Russell plays her role with warmth and class, and is really believable in it.

There's one scene, toward the end of the movie, in which Dorothy pretends to be Lorelei to get her friend out of trouble, and it's really one the best scenes in the movie. A scene which reveals more than any other the point of the story:

That while diamonds might come in handy, it is true love and friendship which are a woman's best friends, and we would do best not to forget that.
