Erasmo I have my doubts that "The Dark Knight" was better than "Frozen River", but I'm glad you thought this movie was very special. This movie garnered two Oscar nominations under their belt and I thought there was some injustice that neither one won the Oscars. The Oscar committee should have seriously reconsidered.

Chris the suspense never stops, just when you thought you figured it all out, another turning point is only a motion away. Hats off to director Courtney Hunt and performers Melissa Leo and Misty Upham who succeeded in making this movie emotional, gripping and real. this is the kind of movie that Hollywood should make more of.

Fred, it actually won a few awards and it was nominated for Academy Awards (Best Director: Courtney Hunt and Best Actor: Melissa Leo). This movie has that manipulating act t get you involved with the story and handles to pull you in the whole way through. I wish more movies were like that.

Very nicely written review Socialib. You wrote some very provocative things in your review and I'm glad that you mentioned the bravery of the two struggling mothers trying to make ends meet. I was greatly proud the writer/director Courtney Hunt succeeds in keeping this movie real and humane. The passiveness of emotions symbolize that in order for our mother protagonists to carry on with their illegal mission, they must not let anything stand in their ways. That's the true meaning of determination. It was hard to see the concrete reaction Ray had on her teenage son from making the effort in buying his younger brother a Christmas present, but the tough love was in good intention. Great review I hope to read more of yours soon.

Very nicely written review Helene! It was very natural of how gradually these two troubled mothers of different cultures (Melissa Leo and Misty Upham) build up on their friendship and trust. It's like when you first meet someone for the first time, you don't know who they are or if you can trust them. It takes time for that to happen. When I saw the movie again last week, I needed a warm blanket to watch this movie, because the scenery was so frosty you just thank God you're warm in your toasty warm house while watching this movie.

Todd, The characters were so natural they actually feel like real people just doing their business and you wouldn't think twice that they were just performers. They could be someone that you have known or seen before I was glad that Melissa Leo and Courtney Hunt got Oscar nominations, it was a shame neither performer won.

Whoa! San Jose Mike chill out man! Yes I get #$%$ off at when men get demonized in movies making them look like degenerates, skirt chasing, beer drinking, fast car riding idiots. But, Mike this movie does not demonize men in any sort of way. Ray never took potshots from her husband, who stole their money to go off to Atlantic City to gamble. She knew he had an illness and never once did we get the feeling she hated men. Same for Lila, in her case her husband died. I think you had the whole movie misconstrued. If you wish I recommend you need to see this again. Just a suggestion.

E I saw The Dark Knight and it was nothing really special (it wasn't terrible, but not worth the hype). I know the movie was very hard to endure at times, but it does give a positive message of hope. The acting was very effective and a huge applaud must go to director/writer Courtney Hunt who made a huge impact in her directorial debut. I could expect big things from her in the future.

Well Stephen G I'm glad you didn't leave the theater because movies like this yearns for your attention. Sure it's bit depressing at times, but it gets better progressively and I liked the build-up relationship between Ray (Melissa Leo) and Lila (Misty Upham) is really remarkable and real. The other cast members who played smaller parts pulled it off quite naturally that you wouldn't think for a second that they were acting. I guess the lesson for you Stephen is never judge a book by its cover.

Well just to let you know that the ending was never intended to wrapped up in a nice little bow and everything is smooth sailing from here on in. Ray didn't have the innocent little job, she was involved in illegal activities and she might have to live with this guilt for the rest of her life.

Well no matter how much you plea for Hollywood to make more dramas like "Frozen River", they'll still keep on producing more garbage that depends on CGI, cheap thrills and loud pyrotechnics. I guess this is about as good as it comes.

I'm glad your son really enjoyed the movie. It is rare that a frugal budgeted movie could turn out to something very special. For a bustling crowd of New York filmgoers silenced by a movie is something you don't see very much these days. Maybe this is what Hollywood should take into consideration with their filmmaking intentions.

The humanity is what made this movie sublime, Curt. Ray will do anything to regain the money that her deadbeat husband stole from her so that she should buy her bigger trailer. For me I thought it was inspiring that she did what she had to make two negatives into a positive. As for the film being a bit amateur, well it was directed by a first-time director and she just needs room to grow. As for Charlie McDermott being miscast, I can't agree with you on that one. Sure it was a simple role playing the cynical teenage son of Ray, but I thought he pulled it off. Not perfectly, but to some level of affection.

It certainly does do that, Anonny! And I would recommend you see "Frozen River" a second time around, because a second viewing could lead you to more information of scenarios you may have missed out in the first viewing.

Stephen, I'm sure Ray was reluctant to get herself into the business of illegally smuggling immigrants across the US border, but she was left without a choice I mean where else is she going get the money? I didn't like what Ray was doing per se, but her family's on the verge of becoming homeless and may have no presents for Christmas so this was the only option she had.

P! Sometimes patience comes to those who wait. It's never an option to give up on hope! It may not come to you right away, we must all thrive to get what we want even if it's not always legal. And I was rooting for Ray Eddy all the way through.

Henry! Most of the best movies don't always depend on high-tech special effects or that everything happens in the fast lane. I liked that you mentioned that for a low budget movie, it runs at a reasonable pace to give the characters a chance to grow. It was an emotional drama that everyone should see if they have the chance.

It sure is Bev! More movies should be like this. Saturated with brilliant dialouge, wonderful cinematography and the acting was overall excellent! I hope that if anyone wants to take a break from the CGI, special effects crap or lame-brained dialogue should take the time and have a look at real acting from real characters with real dialogue.

Hilary, never let those "F" reviewers bother you very much! It doesn't matter how they feel about the movie, it's how you feel about the movie. Let them think what they want. I'm glad that this movie for once centers around the lower class families and gives an insight towards the living conditions these people endure and what they face everyday in their lives. I am glad you brought this up, you tell those naysayers off!

Murphy, I don't think Ray ever intended on wanting to go into the immigrant smuggling business, but she was choiceless. Her #$%$ of a husband abandoned her and her two sons, they eat chips and powered drinks everday for supper, she's being harassed by creditors and she lives in a condemned trailer. I only wanted her what's best from her. To me she's richer than she ever thought she was.
