Being a fan of all things animated, I can safely say that I was impressed with the steps this film took to stand out above the rest. In my personal opinion, animated films these days just don't cut it like they used to (though Brave was also very good!). Shallow humor and modern day references plague the animated world and make it stale. This didn't do that!
First off, before I continue on, I would advise anyone who goes to see this film to look up the original 1984 short of the same title (Frankenweenie) on youtube or borrow the Nightmare Before Christmas special edition DVD from a friend as it contains both this film and another one of Burton's early films. So yes, watch the original first! You'll enjoy this film even more!
I would also like to say that JUST BECAUSE this is an ANIMATED film, it DOESN'T mean that this is KID'S movie. It's not a "Kid's" movie. If you think your kids can't handle a frankenstein-like story. Don't take them! Not all animation is for kids and people don't really tend to understand that!
I saw this film opening day in IMAX. I haven't been to an IMAX showing in a very long time. To me, the 3D effects were definitely much better than standard digital 3D. The sound system just blows you away too! Works best with thunder! I loved the fact that this movie was done in pure black and white as well. It was a fantastic throw back to the old days of movies and the days of the classic horror movies!
Now, I've been a long time Tim Burton fan. I admire his film work as well as his different, strange, style on an artistic level of enjoyment. It's dark and bizarre and isn't everyone's cup of tea. I'll admit if you don't like anything of the sort or if you don't like the classic monster flicks sit this film out!
The story is simple, and familiar as it basically does follow the story of Frankenstein's Monster. Just that this has different focal points while sticking to that base story. So it isn't "new" but it is very enjoyable all the same!
This version however also focuses on the special bond between a boy and his dog and the love that remains and pains after a beloved pet has passed away and that everlasting feeling of what you would do, if you could, to bring them back. I lost my pitbull who I pretty much grew up with about two years ago. This film got me to shed a tear with some of the intense feeling that can be drawn from the characters in their darkest of times. If you've lost a pet you really loved, you'll feel that same bond too (unless you think this is too morbid or whatever. If you don't like dark stay away!).
Victor (main character) does just that! In classic fashion he raises Sparky (his dog), back from the dead just so he can have his loving companion back again. Though..this is taboo to most of the townsfolk and things quickly escalate out of hand into a chain of events you'd have to see this movie to believe!
Perfect film for the Halloween Season too!
Go watch it! If it's up your alley, you're bound to love it!
