Gus Van Sant is a peculiar filmmaker. Despite Good Will Hunting the other films he's made have been...good, average, or just plain weird. That is not to say, however, that Finding Forrester is a bad film, just not as good as his masterpiece Good Will Hunting. Jamal is a boy who's not entirely sure how to proceed with his life. That's when he meets the lonely old man in a building next to his, and soon discovers that he is an infamous writer who begins to pass his teaching onto him. A friendship begins, but trouble proceeds when his teacher accuses him of plagiarism and it's up to Jamal and William to prove his innocence. Finding Forrester is a film about truly trying to be yourself and writing not for others but for yourself. However, the never explained time period can make some elements of the film complicated and the ending seems sort of slopped together. Nevertheless, for anyone trying to find some inspiration, Finding Forrester may be a good film to watch.
