I am always amazed at how many mean people there are on these comment sites. If you have lost a parent, especially as a child, it is incredibly painful. This is about the secret he kept about the situation around someone he loved. I thought he was wonderful.

I could cure his Asperger's with a good old fashioned beating to drive the devil out of him. What an absolute waste of time.

Wow, people in the world like you are why there is so much hate. Somebody should beat the stupid out of you.

I googled "extremely loud and incredibly close" and OBNOXIOUS BRAT and it lead me here. It's taking me several days to watch this film. I understand that the kid is supposed to have Asperger's or something and can't help himself; but whatever I have makes it really hard to watch him, and I can't help that...

The screenplay assumes us viewers supporting the main character, a boy who lost his father.
I found it so hard to support the kid. His annoying psychopathic behavior drove me nuts during the whole movie. The spoiled character looked like he had never been punished.

After reading comments below, both negative and positive, I fully understood that this movie is underrated by a lot of people....most of you think it was a movie about a certain good family man who lost his life in 9/11... it was indeed that and MORE....this was a an excellent father who lost his life in 9/11 leaving behind a child who has Autism and is unable to cope with the loss..normal kids can cope because they have friends, family..a special child could not cope with this type of loss.. Has anyone ever wondered why the dad set oscar off on expeditions??? Its because autistic children has a poor concept of social skills, oscar clearly has this and the dad's love for oscar is so great it transcended even after death. it is an amazing movie.. i can't stop seeing all the angles on this one.... MUST SEE MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!!!

I saw it yesterday. I cried.I think it is about how we're unable to find answers to the questions we most want answered, how we feel obligated to look for something when something may not be there, and how we're somehow still able to be there for each other to make it through times of loss and pain.

I have not been to see this movie for one reason and one reason only...I cried during the trailer so I want to bawl through it at home...I don't think it is meant to excite you or keep you on the edge of your seat...it is to watch it and know the pain and loss of those affected by the tragedy of 9/11 and other great tragedies and how people get through it...I just read "Left to Tell" by Immaculee Illibagiza...she was a survivor of the Rwandan genocide...did not excite me or really entertain me but it grounded me and I learned of a human experience. It is not for everyone but I have been told it is a good watch for those who FEEL human emotions.

Wow are you serious right now? you cried during the preview of this movie.

Yes as a mother I cried at a child's loss of a parent...its awful to lose a loved one, I know this personally. And in such a way that is hard to fathom...it made me cry to think if my child lost me or her father.

I lost my father when i was not much older than the kid in the movie was, but i didnt cry. I have never had a movie make me cry. One movie made me emotional because the story line was very similiar to what i went though when my dad was dying but i never cried just felt sad.

So in other words, every movie tries to profit off of tragic historic events? Every Vietnam war movie, ww2, ww1 film, quest for fire somehow profited off of the hard lives lived by pre-historic man? Did Gladiator profit off of the plight of Roman slaves? Give me a break!!!!!

I would not want to meet you or your "fiancee." Guess this movie was too intellectual for you. Why don't you do everyone a favor and stay home and rent "Twilight."

You thought was going to be an action film and your review turned out to be a political screed, how sad.
Also, you should see a movie, before you review it.

That is the most idiotic view of a movie I have ever heard. Relax on the conspiracy theory. Tom Hanks is a man who takes part in many movies and projects that show terrible events in history, there is nothing wrong with that and if you are so against them making any money then don't go see it. You sound like a conspiracy theorist not a critic.

    Cut the conspiracy crap dialogue.

Typos happen quite often. I'm sure you've had at least one...does it make you illiterate?

I proofread. You can't be bothered? That tells me something too.
    • A Yahoo! User 2 months ago
you must have lots of time to waste if you are worried about proof reading a movie review on yahoo. Typos happen all the time even in government documents!
