I thought the book "Everything is Illuminated" was spoiled by the fantasy sections, but all that silly trashy stuff was completely left out of the film. The ending of the story was also completely changed but that also worked better than the book version.
The transition from slap-stick comedy to the horror of the Holocaust was handled amazingly well.
It was filmed in the Czech Republic, but they really did a great job making it seem like Ukraine. I've been there and they got it right.
